Katraj lake to be cleaned by PMC

Monday, November 26th, 2012

The cleaning of Katraj lake is on full swing. To recycle the water and increase the level of oxygen the civic body has installed four aerators.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had arranged for extra manpower and machinery to remove the dead fish and prevent mosquito breeding in the lake.

The civic body commenced the cleanup work after they found dead fish on the surface of the lake. The civic body has collected water sample which showed that due to less oxygen in the water, fish died and water hyacinth covered the entire river.

Oxygen in water is very essential for marine lifestyle. The samples collected by the civic body showed dissolved oxygen level of 0.5 to 2.5 mg per litre but for good quality of water, the dissolve oxygen should be 5 mg per litre.

Currently, the PMC appointed close to 100 employees with two-earth moversmotor boats, in addition to two spider machine to clean the pond. The PMC’s pest control office has done fumigation in order to avoid mosquito breeding.

NCP permits Daund residents to use water from Pune

Tuesday, July 31st, 2012

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) permitted the release of 0.5 thousand million cubic (TMC) ft of water to the thirsty Daund taluka despite opposition from all major parties in Pune.

Residents of Daund taluka have the right to get water from Khadakwasla, Panshet and Varasgaon dams as 80 per cent of the dam project-affected were rehabilitated in Daund, said Subhash Jagtap, leader of the house at the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

When asked why the water is being released to Daund, Jagtap said, after releasing 0.5 TMC water, the remaining of around 1.2 TMC water can suffice the demand for the next one-and-half month.

However, many political parties opposed the move.

Arvind Shinde, group leader of the Congress party at the PMC, questioned the logic behind releasing water to Daund, when Pune is having an acute water shortage.

Pune’s Ghorpadi society suffers without water for 20 days

Friday, April 15th, 2011

For the last 20 days the residents of Ghorpadi-based Spring Bloom residential society are going through a harrowing time following non-availability of water.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), which supplies water to the society, has failed to carry out the repairs to restore the supply.
With mercury rising constantly, the 72 families residing in that society are at their wits end as to how to cope up with the situation.

After the residents raised hue and cry, the PMC started providing one tanker. But it is insufficient to meet the needs of the 72 families because during summers the demand for water goes up.

Moreover the tanker does not come to the society every day. “We don’t know whether the water supplied by the tanker is clean or not. We have babies in the building and their heath is in jeopardy if that water is contaminated and is used for drinking purpose,” the aggrieved chairman of the society, Col (retd) Mrinal Gupta, told DNA.

“Why can’t the civic administration act with alacrity and complete the repairs so that the water supply is restored. After all we are paying our taxes regularly. So why this step motherly treatment,” quizzed the irked residents of the society.
