The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) permitted the release of 0.5 thousand million cubic (TMC) ft of water to the thirsty Daund taluka despite opposition from all major parties in Pune.
Residents of Daund taluka have the right to get water from Khadakwasla, Panshet and Varasgaon dams as 80 per cent of the dam project-affected were rehabilitated in Daund, said Subhash Jagtap, leader of the house at the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
When asked why the water is being released to Daund, Jagtap said, after releasing 0.5 TMC water, the remaining of around 1.2 TMC water can suffice the demand for the next one-and-half month.
However, many political parties opposed the move.
Arvind Shinde, group leader of the Congress party at the PMC, questioned the logic behind releasing water to Daund, when Pune is having an acute water shortage.
