Pune district administration’s four teams to check oil pilferage

Saturday, January 29th, 2011

The Pune district administration has formed four teams that will carry out raids to seize pilfered petroleum products and arrest offenders from Saturday. Authorities seized about 400 liters of kerosene in a raid carried out at a sweetmeat shop on MG Road, in the city, on Friday.

The district administration’s crackdown on pilferage of petroleum products comes in the wake of the macabre killing of additional district collector of Malegaon, Yashwant Sonawane, by elements involved in stealing of such products from tankers. The bureaucrat was set ablaze and he died on the spot.

The additional district collector of Pune, RK Gaikwad, held a meeting with deputy collectors and police officials on Friday.

Sources in the district administration said they would also inspect petrol pumps to check adulteration.

Meanwhile, a delegation of the Petrol Dealers Association, Pune, is likely to meet Gaikwad on Saturday to discuss pilferage of fuel at the Loni terminal, about 20 km from the city.

The association is sore with the administration for its failure to take effective steps to prevent goons from stealing fuel once the filled tankers leave the terminal.

Financial concerns aside, PMC to get Event Manager

Saturday, January 29th, 2011

Even as the Pune Municipal Corporation continues to face financial burden, the civic body plans to hold cultural and sports events with the help of an event manager.

Instead of putting curbs on spending public money, all party leaders on Friday approved a proposal of appointing an event manager to plan and execute the various events organized by the mayor, including annual sports meets.

“The decision was unanimous. The event manager will mainly plan and execute the events organized by the Pune mayor. Whenever a mayor organises annual sports or cultural events, the PMC has to make arrangements for the same. Now, an event manager will look after organising such program

When civic activists strongly opposed the move of appointing a cultural consultant for the civic body three years back, the standing comm

Office gutted in blaze on SB road, loss estimated at Rs 20 lakh

Friday, January 28th, 2011

The third floor of a commercial building on the Senapati Bapat road was completely destroyed in a fire that broke out on Thurday morning, presumably due to short circuit. No casualty has been reported.

The fire which started around 6.45 am engulfed the office of Yardi Software India Private Limited, located on the third floor of Sigma building.

Security guards tried to control the fire, but they couldn’t since they were not equipped to tackle such a situation. The Aundh fire brigade rushed to the spot in about 20 minutes.

As it grew, another fire tender was summoned from the Erandwana sub-fire station along with two water tankers. It took them about 45 minutes to douse the fire.

Furniture, computers, ceiling tiles, electric wires and other goods worth approximately Rs 20 lakh were gutted

The security men at the building prevented media people from entering the building. It may be recalled that three floors of the Mutha Chambers II, a commercial building located on Senapati Bapat Road, were destroyed in a fire on July 29 last year.

Pune airbase security compromised?

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

It is nothing short of ‘ Pune’s Adarshgate’. A 11 storey building has been erected, without requisite clearance, within 20 kilometres from the Lohegaon Air Force Base. The security hazard has so far been conveniently overlooked, both by the State Government and the Indian Air Force.

Lohegaon airbase is the nerve centre of the Indian Air Force combat fleet in the southwest command and is the base for India’s main fighter plane squad of Sukhoi30 and Jaguars. This IAF base’s security, which is critical for the entire nation, has now been severely compromised.

TIMES NOW Jugal Purohit reports, “Even a cursory glance surrounding the Lohegaon Air Force station will reveal that the 11 storey building is by far the tallest structure in the area and is growing by the day. However, the district authorities and the Indian Air Force have chosen to turn a blind eye to this rather disturbing development.”

Yes, this could well be Pune’s ‘Adarshgate’ because this building — a massive complex of more than 1,500 flats, has been built in violation of the rules. The building needs the IAF’s permission for any construction within 20 kilometres of an air force base, which has not been procured.

A letter by the Indian Air Force’s southwest command clearly says that the project indeed requires their NOC and yet the developer has not even bothered to apply for one.

This reply from the air force makes it clear the developers of the building have not got or sought any such permission. So then, How did this massive construction come up right next to the fighter base? One climb up into the building and you can get a clear view of the fighter base. Should an enemy get access here, targeting Sukhoi base is easy.
For instance no permission is granted between 900 metres from the Air Force boundary. So these kind of intricacies are there.

The worry is national security, but the question is why no-one’s objected so far when the papers filed by the company itself admit the air force base is less than half a kilometer away. What remains unexplainable is the silence maintained on the part of the air force authorities despite the admission by the developers of this 11-storey building.

Medical services in govt hospitals to cost more

Friday, January 21st, 2011

Medical services in all 14 government hospitals in the state will cost 30 per cent from February 1.

“Rates of all medical services – right from preparing case papers to conducting surgeries – have been increased by 30 per cent,” said Vasudev Tayde, director, Directorate of Medical Education and Research ( DMER). “A separate committee has been working on the rate revision of patient care at state government-run hospitals. The charges have been increased as the overall cost of hospital and medical care management has also gone up in the last few years.”

A state government resolution in this regard has been issued. The last rate revision of patient care was in 2000. “The state government had revised its rates in 2007 but the move was soon cancelled. The present revision is taking place after 10 years,” said B G Kulkarni, rector of B J Medical College and Sassoon Hospital.

Making a case paper will now cost Rs 10 as against the present Rs 5. Diagnostic services like CT scans will cost Rs 300 as against the present Rs 250, while a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) will cost Rs 1,800, up by Rs 400. All surgeries, which presently cost anything between Rs 60 and Rs 200, will now cost between Rs 100 and Rs 500. Cancer-related surgeries will now cost Rs 1,000.

The procedure for carrying out high-end surgeries at government hospitals has also been revised.Making a case paper will now cost Rs 10 as against the present Rs 5. The procedure for carrying out high-end surgeries at government hospitals has also been revised. A medical officer at Sassoon Hospital said, “For a sophisticated joint replacement surgery, a patient used to buy an implant from outside and get it fitted at the government hospital at a minimum cost of Rs 200. Now, implants will be made available at the government hospital itself. A joint replacement surgery will now cost around Rs 75,000. A similar surgery in a private hospital costs between Rs 90,000 (using an indigenous implant) and Rs 1.40 lakh (using an imported implant).”
